India’s track and field athletes faced a disappointing conclusion to the Federation Cup in Ranchi, with several athletes missing the Commonwealth Games cut.
Javelin Throwers Fall Short
The men’s javelin event, considered India’s strongest internationally, saw only three athletes breach the 80m mark. Shivam Lohakare won the event with a best of 81.71m, but fell short of the CWG entry standard of 82.61m.
Sprint Events Also Disappoint
In the 200m, national record holder Animesh Kujur won the event, but his time of 20.64s did not meet the CWG entry mark of 20.61s.
Some Successes in Other Events
However, there were some successes for Indian athletes, with Praveen Chithravel comfortably surpassing the Glasgow mark of 16.89m in the triple jump with a leap of 17.08m. Shot putter Samardeep Singh Gill also punched his ticket to his first CWG with a throw of 20.46m.
