India is gearing up to host the maiden World Yogasana Championship in Ahmedabad from June 4 to 8, and ahead of the event, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has announced that the government is pushing for the inclusion of Yogasana in the Olympic Games.
Push for Olympic Inclusion
The Sports Minister stated that Yogasana will be among the traditional sports in the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, and efforts are being made to ensure that it becomes an Olympic sport by 2036, when India is bidding to host the Olympic Games.
The procedure for inclusion in the Olympics requires 75 countries to sign up as members of the international federation, after which a plea can be made to the International Olympic Committee.
World Yogasana Championship
The upcoming World Yogasana Championship will feature 529 athletes from over 60 countries, including 114 Indian yogasana practitioners. The athletes will compete in 12 events across six age groups, ranging from 10 to 55 years old.
The competition will be judged on various aspects, including alignment, symmetry, face direction, and muscle stability, and will be divided into artistic and rhythmic categories.
